Benazir’s ‘$1.5bn assets’ float on the web

ISLAMABAD: An e-mail containing details of the assets worth (estimated) $1.5 billion (almost Rs 90 billion) supposedly owned by Benazir Bhutto and her family is under wide circulation through the electronic mail service these days.

A source claimed that the detail of the assets is the same as reflected in the record of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), however, the original author of this e-mail preferred anonymity. But interestingly a top government official Wednesday shared these details with some members of the media including a senior reporter associated with this newspaper.

Pakistan People’s Party and its top leadership has been consistently denying that Benazir and her spouse Asif Ali Zardari own assets worth $1.5 billion. The party has rather always insisted that the corruption cases were politically motivated. However, the NAB and its predecessor Ehtesab Bureau have been quoting the figure of $1.5 billion as the looted money.
According to the details contained in the lately circulated e-mail, also received by this correspondent, the assets of Benazir with their cost value as declared for the assessment year 1999-2000 (AS 30.06.1999) include Bilawal House (Self) Rs 3,000,000; share in 90 Clifton Karachi (Self) Rs 112,500; Shop in Corniche (Ms Bakhtawar) Rs 300,000; Plot in Nawabshah (Ms Asifa) Rs 7,000; Plot in Gawader-I (Self) Rs 45,000; Plot in Gawader-II (Self) Rs 18,000; Interest in Ice Factory (Self) Rs 114,459; Jewllery (Self) Rs 315,000; NIT Units (Self) Rs 232,698; Share in Zardari Group (Bilawal) Rs 210,000; Share in Zardari Group (Ms Bakhtawar) Rs 200,000; Share in Zardari Group (Ms Asifa) Rs 165,000; Bank Balance (Self) Rs 1,690,696; Bank Balance (Minors) Rs 188,646; Cash in Hand (Self) Rs 2,009,339; Cash in Hand (Minors) Rs 10,487,074; Advance money & share in PPL & Hilal-e-Pakistan Rs 156,200; Less: Liabilities Rs (570,000); texable wealth Rs 15,525,412.
